The Department of Botany was established as early as 1974 a three- year Degree Programme of B.Sc Botany with the motive of imparting quality education to women students from rural areas in and around Pudukkottai district. A three-year bachelor's degree program in Botany provides the foundation for prospective botanists to pursue a graduate level education or find an entry-level career.
The U.G laboratory is well organized structurally and adequately equipped. Further, an extensive collection of well catalogued and indexed books is being maintained as library in this laboratory to cater to the needs of students in these disciplines. With an increasing demand in admission, the strength has been increased from 30 to 40 from the academic year 2021-2022 onwards.
The department has four efficient and dedicated faculty and who strive to offer the learners holistic development, academic excellence and research orientation. The faculty members of the Department are up-to-date in their respective fields and dedicated towards their work. The faculty members are specialized in diverse fields of plant science right from plant tissue culture and plant genetic engineering to plant molecular biology and microbiology. The Department of Botany is equipped with basic instrumentation facilities and has plans to bring in sophisticated state-of-the-art instruments in the coming years.
Our college has always focused This department also aims at making the students understand every minute detail of plants and their existence. The syllabi basically deal right from the study of fungi, algae, to higher order plants including gymnosperms and angiosperms, plant genetics, plant biotechnology, plant physiology, taxonomy, ecology etc. The main target of the department has always been to make the students realize the importance of plants and strengthen their knowledge towards biodiversity conservation for the betterment of the society at large.
