The Department of English had its birth in the year 1969 at Government Arts College for women, Pudukkottai, which functioned in a grand structure called Meenakshi Sathanam donated to the Government by The Maharaja of Pudukkottai, situated in a rustic background in the place called Malaiyeedu. The English Department functioned under the supervision of the first Principal of this college, Selvi.D.V.H. Daisy Devasahayam. In the year 1971, Tmt.T.Vijaya Grace was appointed as Assistant Professor of English along with one Professor and one Tutor handled the Part – II English classes which were divided into three sections each section consisting 80 students.

In 1972 with the introduction of Under Graduate Degree course in Mathematics. It merged in collaboration with both the Arts and Science Departments and found its entrance into the courses as Part II English. The English Department was managed by the regular Professor Mrs. Chandra Shanmugam. Tmt. Raja Rajeswari (1974) and Selvi. Rajalakshmi (1975) were the Heads of the Departments, who have rendered their service to the Department with the help of 5 faculty members. Later, the Department was run by Professor Ms.V. A. Vasantha (1978).

After Professor S.Leela was transferred, Tmt. T. Vijaya Grace took charge as Head of the Department in 1987. Tmt.S. Naomi Stella Sarojini, Tmt.T. Vijaya Grace, Tmt.N. Devakie and Dr. (Tmt). Shyamala Sundarabai were the regular members who have served in the English Department for many year.

In the year 1998, the Department of English had its rebirth. The Department was thus full fledged. In the year 2002 when Mrs. T. Vijaya Grace took charge as the principal with financial powers, Mrs. N. Devakie took charge as Head of the Department. In the year 2003-2004 University examinations Ms.S.Saraswathi received the gold medal from Bharathidasan University.

In the year 2009, The English Department had full- fledged regular faculty. In the year 2013 The Department started its Research Programme M.Phil.,(Full Time) and Ph.D (Part-Time /Full Time). The department also organized a UGC sponsored (Under Autonomous Grant) A Two Day National Conference on Portrayal of Social issues and Challenges Faced by women in World Literature on 24 th and 25 th July, 2013.



  • The PG and Research department of English seeks to module the intellectual development of the students and make them self-reliant and serve the society.


  • To promote literacy to the rural background and specifically to women (our college is a women’s college).

  • Develop critical and logical things.
  • Reinforce the understanding of language and literacy.
  • Appreciate the life through the literature of past and present.
