“History Makes Men Wise” Francis Bacon. The Department of History came into existence in the year 1978 with the Bachelors Degree. The Department of History provides instruction both in English and Tamil Mediums. The Department was enhanced as the Post Graduate Department, when Master Degree was started in the year 2003. The Demand for the course was very much high and hence an additional section of U.G History under shift-II was added in the year 2008. The Department was upgraded as a Research Centre in 2014.

As Puduk0kottai is a Heritage Centre and there are plenty of opportunities and potentialities for the development of Tourism, A separate Bachelors Degree in Tourism and Travel Management was started in the year 2003 under the umbrella of Department of History. Tourism and Travel Management Department has been functioning separately since April 2021. At Present 622 students are pursuing UG, PG, M.Phil and Ph.D courses in this Department.

The Department of History is full fledged with highly qualified Efficient and Dynamic faculty members comprising of Five Assistant Professors and Eight Guest Lecturers. Nine staff members got Ph.D Degree and Three are pursuing Ph.D. The curriculum of the Department includes various Branches of History like Archaeology,Inscriptional studies, Museology, Women Studies, History of Science and Technology, History of Computer Application, General Knowledge and Current affairs etc.
